The Jun Wang Foundation, supported by community members, family, and friends from across northeast Ohio, is rallying to demand Justice for Jun on April 16 and 18, 2022. Together, we will demand that the North Royalton Police Department take responsibility for their murder of our brother, Jun Wang, which took place on October 28, 2016.
Jun Wang was a peace-loving artist, a member of the Catholic community, and a beloved family member, friend, volunteer, and neighbor who deeply loved all people and our democracy. Jun suffered a chronic mental illness after persecution from his participation to promote US democracy in China in 1989. His sister Julia helped him access healthcare, medicine, and the resources he needed to live his best life.
On October 28, 2016, officers in the North Royalton Police Department (NRPD) ended his life when they were called to implement a probate order. Instead of assisting him into the hospital, Jun was unlawfully executed while in custody.
The choices made by NRPD officers that night broke numerous protocols laid out by the Ohio Attorney General, Ohio Revised Code, and police department processes. In the years since Jun’s murder, the NRPD has covered up evidence and falsified reports in order to justify the murder.
The Jun Wang Foundation will be joined by the Tamir Rice Foundation, Greater Cleveland Immigrant Support Network, REACH NEO, Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) NEO, Denison UCC, Metropolitan Community Church of the Western Reserve and several church communities, advocates from mental health organizations, and community members from across northeast Ohio to demand Justice for Jun:
Rally: On April 16, 2022, we will rally outside the North Royalton Police Department (14000 Bennett Rd, North Royalton OH 44133) at noon.
March: On April 18, 2022, we will march from the Justice Center to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office at noon.
Together we will demand:
1. The murder evidence the Cuyahoga County Sheriff Department illegally gave to Defendant North Royalton Police Department be returned back to the medical examiner.
2. Patrolmen Jason Kimmel and Kip McDonald be prosecuted and no longer be armed police officers in any of our communities.
3. Michael O’Malley and Dean Holman be disciplined and removed from their posts.
We invite all mental health advocates and all those with compassion for those with mental illness to join us to ask for justice for Jun.
